Yangon CM stable after heart op: govt

Yangon Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein successfully underwent a heart operation at Yankin Children Hospital yesterday, according to the Ministry of Health and Sports.

The six-and-a-half-hour operation to treat U Phyo Min Thein’s congenital valvular heart disease and an aortic aneurysm was conducted by a team of 17 surgeons led by Professor Dr Aung Ye Oo from the United Kingdom.

U Phyo Min Thein’s condition is stable and has been warded at Yangon Children Hospital, according to the release.

Yangon Regional Minister for Security and Border Affairs Colonel Tin Aung Tun will act as Yangon Chief Minister for the next two weeks while U Phyo Min Thein recuperates from surgery, according to local media.

Daw Nilar Kyaw, Yangon Regional Minister for Electricity, Industry and Transportation told The Myanmar Times yesterday that the regional head of government was on medical leave.

“Yangon Chief Minister is not taking a break from his position. He is on medical leave,” she said.

Daw Nilar Kyaw will take over the task of overseeing the recently launched Yangon bus system while the chief minister is on leave.
