Strong winds wreak havoc in 70 villages

About 70 villages were badly affected and houses destroyed after strong winds swept across Pakokku district on May 7. But there no reports of injuries.

According to the Magway region Department of Relief and Resettlement, aid was being sent to the affected areas.
U Myint Soe, Head of the Magway Region Department of Relief and Resettlement told The Myanmar Times that strong winds hit the Pakokku and Pauk townships on Sunday (May 7) evening, ripping off the roofs of houses.

Also 187 houses collapsed in the affected villages.

According to the department, 17 schools, four pagodas and four monasteries were destroyed as well.

“The winds started at about 5:30 pm. It lasted for almost 30 minutes. The wind was so strong that trees were uprooted, toddy-palm trees split into two and timber planks from houses flew off and broke,”said U Phoe Cho from Pan Laung village of Pauk township.

During the strong winds and heavy rain, the wards of Pakokku and some villages in the east of Pauk Township saw one-inch hailstones raining down, local villagers reported.

Strong winds also destroyed two hen houses, killing two cows and 11,00 chickens in Pakokku Township, deputy administrator U Tin Aung Htun said.

Pakokku district administrator U Ko Ko Lwin said although roads were blocked by fallen trees and tree branches in the region, the Tatmadaw, local police force and the fire department cleared the roads on May 8.

Families of houses destroyed will each receive K100,000 each and essential household items.

Households with damaged roofs will receive K 20,000 and K 100,000 will be contributed to each monastery, the region’s Department of Relief and Resettlement officer U Myint Soe said.
