Several properties in Yoke Chaung village in Mrauk-U township, Rakhine State, were destroyed and damaged by strong winds on the morning of March 13.

Mrauk-U fire department chief U San Tun said two houses, a chicken farm and a granary, were destroyed while 21 other houses lost their roofs in Yoke Chaung in the Htatewa Pyin village tract.

Villagers said the strong winds came suddenly and lasted only 10 minutes.

As so many homes were damaged in the incident, the people were finding it hard to get food and temporary shelter.

No injuries were reported in the disaster, according to the Mrauk-U township administrator, but 107 people suffered damages to their homes.

While the fire department and local authorities helped the villagers clean up after the aftermath, the Rural Development Department had provided aid for the affected people.

“The department has brought 50 tarpaulins, 100 coils of rope, and 50 family kits, and helped put up temporary roofs for the damaged houses, besides relocating the homeless families to the houses of their nearby relatives,” the township administrator said.

Apart from Yoke Chaung, strong winds also destroyed three houses in the Mhan Ni Pyin village, Kyanetan village tract, in the Rathedaung township.
