National League for Democracy (NLD) patron U Tin Oo urged all parties in Myanmar to end conflicts and move towards peace as the country celebrates the 72nd anniversary of the Anti-Fascist Revolutionary Day.

He said all political parties, the Hluttaw, the government and the Tatmadaw should strive to end all armed conflicts among the different ethnic groups in the country and work towards peace, mutual respect, recognition and trust.

He reminded all that independence was gained through the joint efforts of the Tatmadaw, the Communist Party and other political groups, including the People’s Revolutionary Party, in the revolution, even though they had different political beliefs.

“The people’s leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi had said we have not achieved democracy completely.

“But she firmly believes it is possible if we try to achieve national reconciliation without violence,” U Tin Oo said in his speech at the celebration.

The NLD celebrated the anniversary at its Yangon headquarters yesterday. This is the first time the anniversary is celebrated under the NLD government.

Also present were representatives from the Yangon government and various political parties and diplomats.

While NLD observes the anniversary as Anti-Fascist Revolutionary Day, the military has continued to use the term ‘Armed Forces Day’ in their celebration in Nay Pyi Taw.

NLD central executive committee member U Win Htein told The Myanmar Times that changing the name was not the priority at the moment.

“The military will continue to celebrate the anniversary with the name they have been using, while we will do the same,” he said.
