Buddhist Sayadaws, religious leaders of different religions across Myanmar, governmental ministers and social service groups attended the five-day meeting which ended with an 8-point declaration.

In the declaration, the fourth statement notes that: “Anyone carrying out any actions that involve using weapons and violence as a solution, is smearing the good relations between faiths. The preaching of hateful words is fully rejected as it creates more harm than good, and that any uprising problems and difficulties should be approached using the virtues of ‘metta’, and resolved and negotiated in the most peaceful way.”

“Metta” in Buddhism focuses on unconditional love for all.

Dr Zaw Myint Maung, Chief Minister of Mandalay Region, was also present at the meeting and said that the forum was an important step in achieving peace.

“As I saw these blue peace flags waving at this meeting, I felt peace. I’m really contended to watch the people of various faiths in attendance here.

“I’ve come to realise here that there are a lot of Mandalay residents who are wishing for the peaceful coexistence of different faiths. I’m overwhelmed with joy. For many years to come, I hope to be able to proudly say that Mandalay is the city with all the people of faiths living in peace and harmony,” he said.

At the meeting, the Chairman Sayadaw of Mandalay Region Sangha Nayaka Committee, and other religious leaders, gave speeches related to peace.

“We’ve held these interfaith meetings before. As the new government in office is our government, we are supporting this. That’s why the National League for Democracy (NLD) Party is giving assistances,” said U Tin Tun Oo, regional NLD chair.
